The Tirana to Albanian Riviera road trip is the classic reason to rent a car in Albania. This guide gives you a realistic route through Vlora, Llogara, Himara, Ksamil, Butrint, and Gjirokaster without turning the holiday into a driving marathon.
Day 1: Tirana to Vlorë (2.5 hours)
An easy highway warm-up. Stop in Durrës for the Roman amphitheatre if you start early, have a seafood lunch on Vlorë's waterfront, and sleep there — tomorrow is the big drive.
Day 2: The Llogara Pass to Himarë (2 hours of driving, all day of stopping)
The pass is the highlight of the whole trip: forest switchbacks up, a thousand-meter panorama down. Take the viewpoint stops. Descend to Dhërmi or Jale for a swim, and settle in Himarë for a night or two — it's the Riviera's most relaxed base.
Day 3–4: Beaches at your own pace
This is why you have your own car: Gjipe beach (short hike in), Porto Palermo castle, Borsh's endless olive-backed beach, then south to Ksamil's white sand and the Butrint ruins — a UNESCO site that deserves half a day.

Do the Riviera in the right car
Comfortable sedans for the pass, luggage, and a relaxed trip south.
The return: inland via Gjirokastër (recommended)
Instead of retracing the coast, loop back through Gjirokastër's UNESCO old town and the Blue Eye spring. It's a different Albania — stone, mountains, history — and the roads are good the whole way. Tirana is about four hours from Gjirokastër.
Practical notes
- Total driving: roughly 600 km over 4–5 days — comfortable in any of our cars.
- July–August: book accommodation ahead; beaches fill by 11am.
- May–June and September: the same coast, half the people.
- Fuel and cards are fine along the whole route; carry some cash for beach bars.
Car or motorcycle for the Riviera?
A rental car is the easiest choice for luggage, hot weather, families, and beach stops. A motorcycle makes the Llogara Pass unforgettable, but you need the right license, lighter luggage, and more respect for wind, heat, and sudden weather changes.
